Civic bodies at loggerhead
Hyderabad: The Secunderabad Cantonment Board and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation are at loggerheads over the issue of dumping yards, and the two corporations are threatening each other with legal cases.
The GHMC is not permitting SCB to dump waste in their jurisdiction and has asked the Board to dump waste at Jawaharnagar, which is costing the SCB Rs 4 crore annually.
The SCB was not allowed to dump garbage in Malkajgiri, which led to a tiff between the SCB CEO and the Malkajgiri MLA.
SCB ward members will now approach the Chief Minister over the issue. It will also wait for the Rs 7 crore Swachh Hyderabad funds from the state government, which was promised for the Cantonment area.
The trouble began when SCB authorities were trying to locate a trenching ground to be used for the Board’s waste. Though the ground falls in the SCB area, it is close to Malkajgiri, which comes under the GHMC.
Locals opposed the dumping of garbage at the trenching ground and complained to the regional MLA. Further, SCB was not allowed to dump waste and was instead forced to transport it to Jawaharnagar. The issue was taken to the chief secretary who then directed it to the GHMC authorities who asked SCB to pay '27 lakh per month for dumping at Jawaharnagar.
“We are being restricted from dumping in SCB jurisdiction and are instead asked to pay for transportation. In fact, the SCB trenching ground has a well-equipped plant for waste segregation along the line of the Goa Municipal Authority, which will be functional in six months. The ward members will approach the CM. In case the GHMC agrees for transportation of waste for free, the SCB will dump at Jawaharnagar, otherwise the SCB trenching ground will be used. How can the GHMC restrict activities in SCB jurisdiction?” asked the ward members.
