Bengaluru: Pragathi College violated several norms, says VS Ugrappa
Bengaluru: Mr V.S. Ugrappa, an MLC and chairman of the Expert Committee on safety of women and children, on Tuesday visited Pragathi College, where second PU student Gowthami was shot dead by a college attendant, and found several discrepancies.
He said, “The college management has not obtained permission from the authorities concerned to run a boarding school. It has also not taken steps to ensure safety of girl students,” he said. The college is running illegally and its premises have violated building by-laws, he said, demanding immediate action by the government.
On the lack of safety measures for girl students at the college, the committee will soon submit a special report to the state government, recommending appropriate action, he said.
Asked whether the committee has powers to deal with such issues concerning schools and colleges, Mr Ugrappa said that the committee has the mandate to look into such institutions, as it involves the safety and security of women and children, he said.
“The college has not provided adequate facilities to students both in classrooms and at the hostel. The ownership of the land where the college has been built is in question. Before using the land for commercial purpose, the college authorities have not taken prior permission,” he said.
