One more pretty Punjabi kudi ‘lands’ in Sandalwood. Ludhiana born Amann Grewal, a model-turned actress makes her Sandalwood debut in a comedy film, Bachkolli Powder Hakkoli (title inspired by the popular song from Duniya). She speaks exclusively to Bengaluru Chronicle about her journey from being an airhostess for almost five years, to modelling, acting in Punjabi movies, her family and and her Bollywood debut.
“Before I finally chose the South Indian film industry, I had done four Punjabi movies of which two are yet to release. My debut in Bollywood is as exciting as venturing down south. I am playing the protagonist’s role in Rupesh Paul’s India’s Daughter which is largely inspired by the Delhi rape incident and the documentary based upon it. The movie is just an inspiration but has been modified keeping the commercial elements in mind,” says Amann Grewal. Her father, a retired army man, had served the nation as a doctor with her mother being a housewife, and her younger brother into modelling.
The actress reveals that her grandparents are conservative and hence she has always been careful about her projects and chose only ‘respectable’ roles. “Soon after my graduation in commerce, I even worked in a bank for few months before I applied for the post of an air hostess. I got selected both for Lufthansa and Singapore Airlines but I eventually opted for Singapore Airlines as my mother felt that their attire was more appealing,” she adds.
Interestingly, the actress confesses that most of her projects have come her way through social media. “I got big offers including a video song which I will be shooting for Sonu Nigam through my social networking profiles. Many contacted me after liking my profile photographs. Though my friends make me cross-check the authenticity as most of them are fake. I have been lucky,” she laughs.
The Punjabi kudi is determined to do more South Indian films by learning the language. “The first thing I have done is to ask my producer to get me books to learn Kannada and other languages. After getting bored of flying, opportunities for films came knocking at my door and I grabbed them,” she says adding that bikinis are ruled out for now. Amann is open to doing family oriented subjects or even dark films that offer some message.
The actress who currently lives in Mumbai along with her younger brother talks about her other interests. “Apart from travelling, I love dancing. I even possess a diploma in Kathak which I pursued during my stay in Kolkata while my dad was posted there. I love to write too, and so pen my thoughts down,” she confesses.
