Vijayawada Municipal Corporation to initiate works on solar power

The civic body is all set to use solar energy produced on its own premises
VIJAYAWADA: In order to make Vijayawada a Solar City along with 60 more cities in the country, Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has finally taken initiatives to fulfil its promises pertaining to it.
The civic body is all set to use solar energy produced on its own premises, soon after the proposed five 100 KW plants in five places in the city completes. The city was selected as a Solar City along with 60 other cities across the country. Both the Central and state government have assured the corporation that it would release funds in a phased manner.
Corporation office, Council hall, Dr K. L. Rao, head, Water Works and two Sewage Treatment Plants (STP) in Ajithsingh Nagar and Ramalingeswara Nagar has been tasked with the job. As per sources, all the five projects would cost nearly Rs 5 crore.
“Fortunately, 30 per cent of the capital would be subsidised by central government. ‘PPS Enviro’ got the project for '6.98 per unit for 15 years,” said VMC commissioner G. Veerapandian.
During the cloudy and rainy or foggy days, the power generated from Solar plant and UPS (batteries) will be consumed first and the electrical power from grid will be utilised, if the charged power in batteries is exhasusted, the commissioner added.
