AIPMT exams: Bengaluru students hail Supreme Court verdict
Bengaluru: Hours after the Supreme Court cancelled the results of AIPMT examination held on May 3, thousands of students in the city celebrated saying it is a good lesson to the CBSE, which had not made foolproof arrangements for the examination.
They want the Union government to set up a high-powered committee to hold the exam and announce the results on time. The CBSE was scheduled to announce the results on June 5. But now with the apex court ruling, it has to conduct exam within four weeks.
A student alleged that there were doubts about the way the CBSE conducted the AIPMT exam as success ratio of southern state students was very less every year. “Last year too, only a handful of students from Karnataka secured seats under AIQ. It was not a level playing field. We want total transparency in the exam,” she said.
State medical education department officials said that Karnataka has the highest numbers of AIQ seats in the country.
“This year 1,750 MBBS seats are available in the 13 state government medical colleges. Among them 262 are allotted for AIQ. Three-four new state government medical colleges are expected to start this year. The total number of AIQ seats is expected to cross the 300-mark,” an officer said.
According to academics, most of the students opt for AIQ seats as it has the lowest fee structure and has no rural service bond. “Lakhs of students compete for a few thousand of medical seats under AIQ. It is unfortunate that the CBSE failed to ensure transparency,” said Mr Ravish Kumar, a medical education expert.
