73 per cent of youth in Bengaluru aware of abuse of elders

A survey was conducted to understand the mindset of youngsters

BENGALURU: For a city that has the fastest growing number of old age homes, the youngsters are surprisingly sensitive to abuse of elders in Bengaluru. A survey released by HelpAge India reveals that 73 per cent of youth in the city are aware of the ill-treatment meted out to elders by their family members.

The survey was conducted to understand the mindset of youngsters to bring to light the disparity between the youth’s perception about the elderly abuse and the reality.

HelpAge India conducted an extensive, ten city survey among young working adults in the age bracket of 25 to 45, living with at least one elderly parent. Deputy Director, State Head, Karnataka, HelpAge India, Rekha Murthy, said, “The survey was carried out four months ago across ten metropolitan cities, including Bengaluru. A sample size of 200 households was selected from 20 middle and upper middle localities in each of the city. As per the report findings pertaining to Bengaluru, strangely 25.5 % of the city youth witnessed abuse, whereas as per the 2014 survey based on elders experience it was 75 per cent.”

According to the study conducted in Bengaluru, only 31 per cent of the youth perceived son as an abuser, whereas 65% elders reported about their son as prime abusers in the survey conducted in 2014.
