Sopore killings unfortunate, will approach Governor: National Conference

A former militant was on Monday gunned down in the town

Srinagar: Opposition National Conference on Monday termed as "unfortunate" the string of militant attacks targeting civilians in Sopore township and said it will approach Governor N N Vohra over the issue.

"These attacks are unfortunate and unacceptable. There is fear among the people. They are insecure. The party condemns the attacks," NC general secretary Ali Mohammad Sagar told PTI.

A former militant was on Monday gunned down in the town, the fourth in a series of mysterious killings and second since yesterday in the region by unidentified gunmen. Sagar criticised Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed's silence on the issue and sought to know from him who was behind the attacks.

"It is his (Sayeed's) responsibility. He should break his silence. As Home Minister, he should say who is behind the attacks and what is the design behind them," he said.

The NC leader said that it was decided in a party meeting that he would led a delegation that would approach the Governor over the issue. The previous Omar Abdullah government had achieved peace to a larger extent in the state but now killings were happening almost everyday, he alleged.

"We were talking about peace. We were talking about lifting AFSPA. But see the situation now. We have killings everyday here now," he said.
