Son kills father over property

In drunken fury, accused murders by smashing head with stone

Coimbatore: In a ruthless act, a 35-year-old man murdered his elderly father by smashing his head with a stone over a property dispute in Karamadai on Saturday. Police arrested Rangaraj for murdering his father Kandasamy (70). Police said Kandasamy, a resident of Kopaneri village in Karamadai, was looking after a 2.5 acre coconut grove.

All his four daughters and two sons are married and were living with their families separately, while Kandasamy was staying alone in the farm. The victim’s youngest son Rangaraj, who had settled down in Nellithurai in Kerala after marriage, had come down to meet his father two months back.

“The accused, under the influence of alcohol, had entered into a quarrel with his father after asking him to give away the coconut grove to him. However Kandasamy refused to do so claiming that the property cannot be given to one person as others too have a stake in it,” police said.

An infuriated Rangaraj had assaulted the elderly man with a wooden log and pushed him to the ground. He then picked up a stone and smashed his father’s head and he died on the spot bleeding profusely. Based on a complaint by the victim’s elder son Kanagaraj, the Karamadai police registered a case and arrested the accused from his hideout. The accused, who had also confessed to the crime, was sent on remand.
