Traffic, an international wildlife trade monitoring network, has said the current policy regime for red sanders is “muddled”
New Delhi/Hyderabad: Amid rampant smuggling of red sanders, a green body has advocated a comprehensive policy for sustainable conservation of the endemic timber species.
Traffic, an international wildlife trade monitoring network, has said the current policy regime for red sanders is “muddled”.
“The policy regime appears to be muddled at this point of time as there are conflicts of situations,” said Shekhar Kumar Niraj, head Traffic, in a report titled Red Sanders: An Ecological Boon Or An Enforcement Bane 2015’.
Mr Niraj stressed on the need for coherence between the policies in India and the countries where red sanders is in large demand. It pointed out that while the exploitation of red sanders in Japan and China was known, its usage in ayurvedic medicines was revealed when, during the first phase of auctions, a large consignment was bought by Indian bidders.
