Blood donation saves 66-year-old UP native

The patient had been going through a difficult situation for the last 35 years

KOCHI: Even as World Blood Donation Day was being observed on Sunday with various programmes, a group of youngsters donated blood to save the life of a 66-year-old patient from Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh.

A team of doctors at KIMS Hospital, Kochi saved the life of Kallan Prasad from Uttar Pradesh, who was suffering from a large goitre of the thyroid gland, through a rare and complex surgery.

The patient had been going through a difficult situation for the last 35 years. Though doctors at the hospital near his native village were willing to perform the surgery, difficulties in getting blood had delayed the procedure. With time, the goitre assumed enormous proportions and the lump in his neck affected his social life and confidence.

Later, his son emigrated to Kerala for work and brought his father to KIMS Hospital. The surgery was very complicated as the gland was encroaching into the upper chest and high up into the neck.

Blood required for the surgical procedure was donated by Rajeev, a native of Edayar and his friends.

The team of specialist doctors successfully remo-ved the affected thyroid gland. Other vital organs were not affected during the complicated procedure.
