Teenage high school comedy starring Mae Whitman in the lead hits theatres in India on 12th June. Mae had started her career as a child artist in The Independence Day and One Fine Day has now graduated to playing the lead in The DUFF. In a scene Mae had to enact a makeover to look hot and she was required to try out several panties. The actor tried more than thirty panties to work on various improvisations for the scene but was uncomfortable at the end of it.
Robbie Amell who was also a part of the same sequence came to her rescue and suggested that the panties be replaced by clothes that would portray different looks. Director, Ari Sandel, also agreed with Robbie and the sequence was changed, “Yes we tweaked the scene a bit so that Mae could emote properly. The actors needed to be comfortable to put in their best. The scene has come out really well. There is a lot of quirk that Mae added to it. Mae really used the space very well”.
Whitman plays the titular role in The DUFF, seventeen year old Bianca Piper. She portrays an underdog who gets bullied and relegated to a low rung in the social pecking order by her more popular counterparts. The story traces her journey in accepting herself.
Talking about the scene Mae says, “The scene was a part of her coaching process but wasn’t she really doesn’t Bianca does not change her persona in the film. Wesley coaches her to be hot and how to win a date but she picks up the lessons selectively. She does not really go through a makeover but makes a better version of herself through self discovery. I almost tried a shopful of lingerie and clothes for the make over scene. It was fun. Almost like my high school days when you would sleepover at your friend’s and do pyjama party with pizza, beer, trying out clothes and makeup.”
'The DUFF' has grossed very well overseas and given a dearth of films in this genre the film is poised to rake in the moolah at BO.
