Sliver of hope in tracing Dornier

Naval ship picks up faint beacon signal of missing Coast Guard aircraft
Chennai: After almost four days, which passed by with no headway being made, one of the naval ships, searching for the missing Coast Guard aircraft, picked up unverified intermittent radio signals from underwater, off the Karaikal-Cuddalore coast, believed to be the last known location of the ill-fated flight.
On Saturday afternoon, inspector general SP Sharma, eastern region commander, Coast Guard, told reporters that INS Sandhayak picked up the signals from the aircraft, which has a sonar-locating beacon.
In the evening, however, a Coast Guard official specified the signal was a ‘weak one’ and was picked up by the ship only once. “On Saturday, around 6 pm, a weak signal was noticed, but it needs verification. Considering the sea is very deep, a submarine fitted with sonar will undertake a detailed survey of the area tomorrow,” he said.
Furthermore, the search party detected oil spill, characterised by concentric circles of multi-coloured sheen of oil, in the same region. The sample of oil has been sent to the laboratory for analysis. It should, however, be noted a similar sample, taken on Thursday, was negative as no traces of oil wer found in it.
