Now, selfie contest to save girl child

Sunil, every year, conducts some programme for the welfare of women and children
Hyderabad: If you thought a selfie could do no good, then you should head out to the village of Bibipur, in one of the states with the most skewed sex ratio, Haryana. Currently, a campaign — ‘Selfie kheecho, beti bachao’ — targeted at ‘increasing the importance of girl child at home’ is ongoing. And the Sarpanch behind the plan is Sunil Jaglan.
Sunil, every year, conducts some programme for the welfare of women and children on his birthday, on June 19. And this year he came up with the this unique selfie campaign.
Families are supposed to click selfies with their daughters and send it across to the panchayat and the three best selfies will win an award, a certificate and a price money of Rs 2,100. A panel of 30 women sarpanches and anganwadi workers from Punjab will pick the winners.
Haryana is among the bottom five states in terms of sex ratio. In 2014, the sex ratio at birth was 871. Sunil says it all started with the birth of his first daughter, Nandini. “In 2012 when my daughter was born I was so happy that I offered some money to the nurse. But she was not happy, as it was a daughter,” he said adding that he was so shocked by the incident that immediately he started working towards the welfare of the girl child.
‘Even our PM is seen clicking selfies. So I thought why not use it when everybody loves to click selfie,” said Sunil, who was the first sarpanch who had let women take part in a khap mahapanchayat.
