Medical Council of India approves 3 medical colleges for Karnataka

These new medical colleges would be opened in Kalaburgi, Gadag and Koppal

Belagavi: The Medical Council of India (MCI) has approved three new medical colleges for the state, and these would be opened in Kalaburgi, Gadag and Koppal, according to medical education minister Sharanprakash Patil.

He told the media at Vijayapura that these new medical colleges would admit 150 students each from this academic year as the state government has taken necessary steps to provide adequate infrastructure. The state government has submitted a proposal to the Union government for establishment of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Karnataka as at least four to five districts have the requisite infrastructure, he added.

Mr Patil said the government would conduct CET without any hiccups this year and make sure that the entire CET schedule was completed on time. The process of allotment of seats in medical colleges would begin shortly.

He was keen about a uniform CET across the country for admission to medical colleges but the Supreme Court prevented the governments from intervening in the admission process of private colleges. Therefore, the government has urged Union health minister J.P. Nadda to introduce an amendment in Parliament.
