Thanjavur: The District and Sessions court here on Saturday convicted and sentenced a person from Nagapattinam district to double life imprisonment for rape and murder of a deaf and dumb girl in 2012.
The Jury, S. Karthikeyan, Judge of First Additional District and Sessions court (Protection of Civil Rights section) directed the accused Easwaran (31) of Oorkudi village in Keelvelur panchayat union to also pay a fine of Rs10,000, in the case of rape and murder of one Kavitha (22), a differently-abled woman.
Kavitha, daughter of Muthusamy and resident of Perumpugalur in Tiruvarur district came to her sister Kumutham’s house at Oorkudi village and had been staying there.According to the prosecution, on July 3 2012, when Kavitha went out of the house to attend nature’s call around 9 pm, Easwaran raped her and threw her in water in a quarry.Police registered a case and arrested Easwaran. R.Satheesh Kumar, Public prosecutor appeared for Kavitha and argued the prosecution’s case. The judge gave the order on Saturday.
