Lack of proper toilets in schools irk parents
Guntur: With schools reopening on Monday, most parents seem worried over the poor toilet facilities in both public and private schools.
According to official data available with Guntur district educational officer K. V. Srinivasulu Reddy, about 7,600 toilets need to be constructed for both public as well as private schools in the district.
The district educational department officials informed that as per government prescribed norms there should be a toilet for every 40 students, and there should be separate toilets for boys and girls.
Demands from different schools are pending since adequate fund is not available to sanction the required amount for construction of toilets, informed the officials.
Mr Srinivasulu informed that about 2,400 toilets need to be constructed for the coming academic year but government has sanctioned 1,600 under various heads including Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan (RMSA), Sarva Siksha Abhiyan (SSA) and Corporate Social Response (CSR) funds, in the district so far.
Danaboyina Nagaraju, a displeased parent of Class IX girl student at Brindavan Gardens said that water is not available most of the time in the flush tank. “It is a major problem for students,” he added.
When asked about the same, Mr Srinivasulu informed that now the government is constructing toilets with water tank on the top of the construction along with a motor.
Mr Srinivasulu explained that as per the new proposal, a toilet at any school should consist of one toilet, three urinal facilities, one water head tank, an electric motor to pump water to the tank and be completely surrounded by walls. He also informed that a minimum of '2 lakh per unit has been estimated for one toilet.
