EC changes general observer for R K Nagar byelection
The elections department on Saturday released the final list of candidates for the June 27 bypoll
Chennai: In a major development impinging the Radhakrishnan Nagar bypoll in the city, the Election Commission (EC) on Saturday appointed a new general observer Jyothi Kalash replacing the no-nonsense Raju Narayana Swamy, who was early this month appointed as general observer by the EC. A statement from CEO Sandeep Saxena said the new observer assumed duty and the public can reach him on landline No. 044-28515342 or mobile 9445071056, the statement said. The elections department on Saturday released the final list of candidates for the June 27 bypoll.
The list after withdrawal of nominations has 28 candidates in the fray including AIADMK supremo J. Jayalalithaa and C. Mahendran of CPI and 26 others. On Saturday, four candidates withdrew their nominations.
Civic activist K.R. Ramaswamy, popularly known as ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy, is among the 21 independents who will be testing the election waters. To ensure better polling percentage in R.K. Nagar, Chennai collector, E. Sundravalli kick-started a signature campaign at Tondiarpet to increase awareness among voters. The city corporation also began the verification and randomisation of EVMs to be used for the high-profile bypoll.
The Chennai corporation in a press release said candidates and members of the public can meet the observer for any electoral complaints between 11.00 am and 12.00 noon at the office of the Zonal Officer-4/returning Officer, No. 266, Tiruvotriyur High Road, Chennai – 600 021. The complaints can also be filed at the control room for elections, functioning in the Ripon Buildings, Corporation of Chennai, at Toll free number 1800-4257012, the release added.
Traffic Ramaswamy on fast
Social activist, ‘Traffic’ Ramaswamy, 82, on Saturday went on a fast demanding the resignation of city police commissioner S. George and corporation commissioner Vikram Kapur. The octogenarian activist alleged that the top bureaucrats were supporting the government and are impeding fair bypolls in R.K. Nagar.
Mr Ramaswamy alleged that the city police commissioner had instructed his subordinates not to acknowledge any complaints from him after he approached the cops to file a complaint against the AIADMK mouthpiece, Dr Namadhu MGR.
