Discuss kuruvai problems with delta farmers, says Vasan
Thanjavur: The Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G. K. Vasan on Saturday said that Tamil Nadu Government should call the farmers of Cauvery delta districts and discuss the problems they face due to dropping of ‘kuruvai’ paddy cultivation this year. He told presspersons here that the Government should announce schemes based on farmers’ feedback instead of unilaterally announcing a ‘kuruvai package’.
Vasan charged the Central Government with being indifferent to the problems faced by farmers of Tamil Nadu and also the state Government, which instead of getting due share of Cauvery waters from Karnataka as per the final award of the Cauvery river water disputes tribunal, had announced a package.
The TMC leader appealed to the state Government to provide continuous supply of power to agriculture pump sets so that those who have raised Kuruvai using underground water could sustain their crop. Referring to the Union Minister of Law and Justice Mr. Sadanand Gowda’s statement that there was no pollution in river Cauvery and that effluents are not let into the river, he said it was not a responsible statement for a minister to make.
Letting effluents into Cauvery river should not be politicised as it affects the livelihood of Tamil Nadu people, he pointed out. Vasan also disclosed that Kamaraj’s birthday would be celebrated in a grand manner on July 15 at ‘Thilakar Thidal’ at Thanjavur.
