Alert public rescue victims
Offenders of various kinds were caught in six instances
Chennai: In what seems to be a welcome trend in reacting to offences in public places, six offenders, including two women, were caught by alert members of the public in 24 hours since Friday afternoon from four scenes of crime. And in three cases, people had also thrashed the suspects before informing the police about the incidents.
In an incident that occurred on an omnibus plying between Chennai and Tiruchy, a man in his late 20s was beaten up inside the moving vehicle by other commuters for allegedly misbehaving with a woman passenger. The incident took place round 10 pm when the bus reached near Mahindra City. The man boarded the bus from Tambaram and as soon as he was given a seat, he started troubling a woman sitting in the front seat by trying to grab her.
Objecting to this, she started shouting following which other passengers thrashed the man and forced him to get off the vehicle. His refusal to get down and subsequent chaos on GST Road led to traffic jam for more than 20 minutes. Despite being beaten up, he claimed that he should be allowed to travel on the bus to Tiruchy because he had paid for the ticket. But other passengers insisted that the offender should not be allowed to travel on the bus as he may try misbehaving with same woman or some other woman in the vehicle.
As the passengers of the bus were standing in front of the bus insisting that the man should not be allowed to continue his journey by the same bus, there was a traffic snarl. Because the victim was not keen on lodging a complaint with the police, the bus crew also decided to continue the journey without the offender.
In another incident where citizen vigil became evident was overpowering a knife-wielding ex-convict who attacked a train commuter near Meenambakkam railway station on Friday afternoon. Convict ‘Katta’ Kumar, who had come out of jail four days back, was fleeing after robbing Saravanan of Thiruvotriyur and inflicting knife injury on him when onlookers managed to overpower him with the help of an RPF man.
Kumar was beaten up by the public and later handed over to the Tambaram railway police while Saravanan was sent home with stitches on his face and hand.
Members of public caught two men identified as Ramachandran, 29, an autorickshaw driver, and his associate, Siddique, 22, for misbehaving with a school girl near Oil Mill bus stop in Pallikaranai on Friday evening. The two were thrashed by the people and handed over to the police.
In yet another incident, train passengers at Tambaram railway station nabbed two women who slashed the handbag of woman bank employee, V.K. Aruna, and lifted her purse on Saturday morning as she was getting down from an EMU. The suspects were later identified as Lakshmi, 32, and Chitra, 22, from Dindigul.
