Slum-free city a distant dream
Officials clueless as Centre issued no directions
Vijayawada: Launched as a pilot project in Vijayawada in 2013, the Rajiv Awas Yojna (RAY) has been shelved midway with no hopes of completion in the near future.
The ambitious scheme was launched by the Central government in 2013 envisaging a slum free India. In Vijayawada, the then tourism minister K. Chiranjeevi and municipal commissioner Haribabu launched the project. It was aimed at constructing 304 houses in Pezzonepet's Dal Mill Road and 1,415 houses in Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Colony in Payakapuram. Plans were approved and initial funds were also released.
However, the project first got shelved midway, halting the works and finally, it was called off after the scheme was scrapped from the list of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP-led NDA government. Though the corporation tried to complete the project, lack of funds made it difficult for the contractors to take up pending works.
Speaking on the issue, a senior officer of the housing department said, “Though RAY shared common points with JnNURM, it failed to achieve the goal due to delay in execution and negligence of officials." Meanwhile, the corporation officials are clueless on the issue as no further directions have been given by the Centre.
