Northeastern states on high alert after intelligence agencies warn of revenge attack

New Delhi: Intelligence agencies have sounded a high-security alert across the Northeast, warning that militants have entered India for revenge attacks following the Army’s strike in insurgent camps.

Following this, home minister Rajnath Singh, along with defence minister Manohar Parrikar, NSA Ajit Doval and senior officials from the Army, top intelligence and security agencies held a meeting to review the situation.

Intelligence inputs suggest that at least 20 militants belonging to the NSCN-K, PLA, Ulfa, and other groups like the newly-formed United National Liberation Front of West South East Asia, had crossed into India from Myanmar for revenge attacks following Tuesday’s surgical strike by the Army.

The security situation in the Northeast region was discussed, particularly in wake of the Army operation. While the Centre was satisfied with the security arrangements in the region, sources claimed that possibility of similar strikes in future cannot be ruled out.

But the government may move with extreme caution while carrying out such surgical strikes in future as general elections are due in Myanmar soon.

The NSA will be visiting Myanmar and will hold discussions with the political leadership there to explain the circumstances that led India to carry out the operation.
