Doctors warn against artificial sweeteners
Hyderabad: Artificial sweeteners like aspartame are a big no-no, say doctors as they affect the neurological functioning as well as the kidneys.
These artificial sweeteners are often added in products that are supposed to have fewer calories.
Nutritionist Madhurima Sinha says, “Whenever a product shows that it is low on calories, people must check for this chemical. It is high on fructose and amino acids. These sugars are found to increase the insulin levels in the body and daily consumption is not advisable.”
Senior general physician Dr B. Srinivas said, “There is a lot of strain on internal organs. The chemical is now being identified as one of the causes for fatty liver. There is decline in the functioning of kidney, lack of sleep and also indigestion.”
Presently, the food market is flooded with low calorie products and artificial sweeteners thus pushing people to high risk of getting diseases.
Consultant neuro-physician Dr Suresh Reddy said, “Indigestion is one indication that the body is not comfortable with certain foods. Often during our questions to patients, these diet fads are revealed and people are not aware what they are consuming.”
