Bid to smuggle gold bars foiled by Customs

Riyaz had concealed the gold bars in his shoes and was supposed to carry it to Kozhikode

Kochi: Customs officials at the airport on Thursday seized 2 kg of gold from a passenger who arrived from Sharjah by an AI Express flight. The arrested was identified as Riyaz from Kozhikode.

Riyaz had concealed the gold bars in his shoes and was supposed to carry it to Kozhikode. But, the flight diversion due to incidents at Karipur airport upset his plans.

Meanwhile customs officials also arrested two more persons in connection with the seizure of 13 kg of gold from the airport on May 24.

The arrested are Siraj T.K., 26, from Kochi, employed with the ground handling agency Bird Worldwide Flight Services (BWFS), and Abdul Latheef, 25, from Perumbavoor, working with a private airliner. With this arrest, the total number of people arrested in connection with the case has gone up to 19.
