#JustATampon selfies hit with sanitary items

Campaigners are talking selfies with sanitary products to raise awareness among people

Washington: According to a VPoint news, who helped set up the initiative in partnership with Plan UK, there are three separate points that need addressing to the latest social media campaign, #JustATampon. Tampons and sanitary towels are a pricey but necessary expenditure every month of women’s life until the menopause. The company is still taxed as a ‘luxury’ item, which adds extra cost to buy the product. But, the primary idea behind this latest campaign is that there is absolutely no cost involved in it.

The stigma that still exists when it comes to menstrual health is that why can’t we bring ourselves to talk about periods? Several organisations are hoping that by people seeing the pictures in their news feeds, our menstrual cycles become more of an approachable subject.

But, finally, there is a charitable aspect to it all, as with the ice bucket challenge and “no make-up selfies”. The campaigners said that just by texting Tampon to 70007, people will be able to donate £3 to Plan UK, a charity dedicated to supporting girls’ rights.

The charity says: “Your donation could help support our menstrual health work in the developing world and our project dedicated to transforming girls lives” “Just £3 can provide a girl in Uganda sanitary towels for a year. Donations will help tackle discrimination faced by girls globally, not just around menstrual hygiene but other issues they face including child marriage and female genital mutilation.”
