SUV rains money on parched Uttar Pradesh road
Villagers collected all notes fallen from the car, cops yet to get a breakthrough
Lucknow: For millions in Uttar Pradesh, it rained fire on Tuesday when the temperatures crossed the 46 degree Celsius mark, but for a chosen few destiny had other plans. It seemed a scene straight out of a Bollywood potboiler when wads of currency notes, in the denomination of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000, spilled out of a luxury SUV on the Lucknow-Gonda Highway on Tuesday afternoon and the few that had braved the heat to venture out of their homes, happily collected the money and returned home rich.
According to sources, the SUV was racing through the highway near the Bakhtawar Singh village when the vehicle bumped into a pothole and the hatchback got opened. Suddenly, the money that had been apparently stored there began falling off on the road. As the currency notes spilled out, the car continued to move ahead and villagers made a beeline to collect the notes.
Some vehicles that were coming from behind, also stopped to collect the money. “Severe hot winds were blowing in the area. We suddenly saw bundle of notes flying out of a car. Within minutes, people gathered and collected all that fell on the street. I think several lakhs of rupees fell out of the vehicle but the driver and others in the car did not turn back,” said an eye witness.
The police was informed, but by the time the cops reached the village, there was no sign of the villagers and not even a single currency note had been left behind. Superintendent of Police Rajesh Pandey said that as soon as the report came in, police teams were alerted along the highway, but the vehicle could not be traced. He said that the matter was a serious one and proper investigations had started. However, no report had been filed about the money and not a single villager had admitted to having taken the money.
