Oommen Chandy to campaign today
UDF candidate K.S. Sabarinathan and BJP candidate O. Rajagopal filed their nomination papers
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: UDF candidate K.S. Sabarinathan and BJP candidate O. Rajagopal filed their nomination papers on Wednesday for the Aruvikkara byelection to be held on June 27. Boosting Mr Sabarinathan’s spirits, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who is set to conduct a day-long campaign in Aruvikkara on Thursday, said that the UDF would win the bypoll.
Mr Sabarinathan followed his late father's practice of visiting the UDF election committee for filling up the nomination papers. Later, he went to Aryanad and paid floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. Thereafter, he drove straight to the office of returning officer Johnson Premkumar at 2 p.m. and handed over the nominations paper at 2.30 p.m.
As per his papers, Mr Sabarinathan has assets, including bank balance of Rs 50,10,439 , land worth Rs 53 lakh in Kudapanakkunnu and Thonackal panchayats. Mr Rajagopal submitted his nomination papers at 11 a.m. State party president V. Muraleedharan and other leaders accompanied him. The veteran BJP leader has a bank balance of Rs 11,16,786 and one acre of land worth Rs 4 lakh in Alathur . PDP leader Poonthura Siraj filed his papers in the morning. Altogether, 20 candidates have filed their nominations. The scrutiny will take place on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Mr Oommen Chandy claimed that UDF was set to win the bypoll. “I have already made it clear that Aruvikkara bypoll is a referendum on the performance of the UDF government. People will stand unitedly with the UDF,” he added..
“I can understand the frustration in the LDF camp. As the former ports minister, Mr Vijayakumar, LDF candidate, could not make Vizhinjam project a reality during his tenure. Now we have succeeded in bringing it,” he said.
