Kochi: Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed the last petition challenging the election of Shashi Tharoor from Thiruvananthapuram constituency. Justice P. Bhavadasan dismissed the petition filed by K. R. Haridas of Thiruvananthapuram who is also a voter in the constituency. The petitioner argued that Tharoor had convened a meeting of 60 pastors of Pentecost community on April 5 at 10.30 p.m. in his residence. He also offered cash and other promise to influence the voters, the petitioner submitted.
The court observed that the petition lacked necessary particulars and pleadings. Hence, the court could not interfere in the petition. The court had earlier dismissed three such petitions against Tharoor's election. Tharoor had appeared before the court and made his submissions. The court dismissed the petitions alleging fund misuse and wrong affidavits being filed before the court.
The petitioner alleged that Tharoor had spent crores of rupees for the election campaign which was way more than Rs. 70 lakh fixed under Section 77 of the Representation of People’s Act read with Rule 90 of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1963. BJP leader O. Rajagopal also challenged his election arguing that Tharoor had failed to submit Sunanda Pushkar's assets before the election commission.
