Bengaluru: Lawyer locked up for fighting for juvenile

He was allegedly roughed up and locked up at the Ramamurthynagar police station

Bengaluru: A lawyer who is also a human rights activist was allegedly roughed up and locked up at the Ramamurthynagar police station on Wednesday when he asked the police why they had detained a 15-year-old boy on charges of theft.

The lawyer, Raghupathy, immediately called up his associates at Manthan Legal Services, who along with lawyers from Alternative Law Firm arrived at the police station to lodge a complaint against the abusive policemen.

“Raghupathy had gone to the station to ask why the juvenile was detained and put in the lockup as the case needed to be investigated under the Juvenile Justice Act,” said Maythrie, a colleague of Raghupathy.

A group of Dalit activists and officials from the Child Rights Commission too found their way to the police station and intervened. After arguments between the officials from the Child Rights Commission and the policemen, the juvenile was let off, said Maythrie.

A complaint was lodged by the lawyer against the abusive policemen and the matter was escalated to the jurisdictional DCP N. Satheesh Kumar. ACP K.R. Puram, Badrinath spent almost the entire day at the police station to pacify the lawyers and the officials of the child rights commission.

A departmental inquiry has been initiated against the erring policemen, said a senior police officer.
