Driver held for stealing jewels
Chennai: The Mambalam police on Wednesday arrested a 32-year-old cab driver for stealing the jewels of a bride from a wedding hall in Mambalam a week ago. P. Jeyapal was hired by the bride's family to ferry them from their home in Madipakkam to the hall on South Boag road on Monday. On reaching home, the bride Sangeetha’s family found that 30 sovereigns of gold jewels packed in their luggage were missing after which they approached the Mambalam police with a complaint.
The police recovered CCTV footages from Krishnasamy marriage hall where the wedding took place. The footage showed one of the drivers stealing money from the dashboard of another car following which the cops grilled him. The accused is a native of Tirunelveli and settled in Saidapet, the police said.
The cops initially contacted Jeyapal posing as customers for a trip. However, when he resisted, he was summoned to the police station where he confessed to his crime. The police said he had pledged the jewels at a shop in Ashok Nagar. Jeyapal was remanded in judicial custody.
