Burglars shoot in bid to loot pawnbroker
Chennai: A 45-year-old pawnbroker was shot at by two unidentified men who tried to rob him when he was at his shop in Medavakkam on Wednesday night. K. Sunil Kumar escaped with bullet injuries on his left shoulder, the police said. The incident happened in the busy bazaar area of Medavakkam around 9 pm. According to police sources, the two men came in an auto and one of them entered Sunil Kumar’s shop, Sri Sai Ram Jewellery and Pawn Brokers.
After going through the jewellery in the showcase, the youth demanded Sunil Kumar part with money. When he resisted, he pulled out a hand revolver and fired a shot at Sunil Kumar. “The bullet pierced through his left shoulder making him swoon,” police sources said.By the time Sunil could raise an alarm, the youth pulled down the shutter and fled in the autorickshaw that was on standby.
Shop-keepers alerted the police who rushed to the spot and sent Sunil Kumar to a private hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, a few members of the public gave chase to the autorickshaw which took the Mambakkam road nearby. One of them took to his heels while the other fled with the auto. The police suspect it to be a stolen auto. “Sunil Kumar is a resident of Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam and has been running his shop on Tambaram Velachery main road for the past five years,” sources added. The Pallavaram police have formed special teams to nab the accused.
