KMML system to monitor pollution
Residents near KMML factory said it was another ploy to fool them
KOLLAM: The Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd at Chavara has installed a real-time atmospheric pollution monitoring system as part of its social commitment, A huge screen installed in front of the titanium factory displays the quantity of pollutants present in the vicinity of the factory.
The quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide and other nitrites present in the air are shown on the monitor. “It has been installed in accordance with the direction from the Pollution Control Board and as part of the company’s social commitment,” a KMML official told DC.
Meanwhile, the residents near KMML factory said it was another ploy to fool them. “Installing a monitor alone will not fulfil the social commitment. The real issue lies with the environmental pollution by the factory which handles hazardous chemicals. It should declare the area within five- kilometre radius as a buffer zone,” a local resident said. The Cochin Refineries and the Pollution Control Board head office in Thiruvananthapuram also have such monitors installed in their compounds.
