Erosion spoils Visakhapatnam’s beauty

Except temporary measures, no permanent steps taken to check erosion
Visakhapatnam: The coastal erosion, which has been triggering widespread panic for the past two years, has struck again on Tuesday with the tides washing away the sand dunes near the Gokul Park area at Ramakrishna Beach on Tuesday.
There is a deep-seated concern among Vizagites that the stroll along the beach may become a distant dream in the future with the gap shrinking between the coast and the sea, which has reduced to a mere 50 metres from 250 metres due to erosion.
The beach area is shrinking at an alarming pace due to the increasing sea level and melting glaciers due to the global warming. The picturesque Vizag be-aches draw thousands of tourists from AP and neig-hbouring states every day.
On Tuesday, the erosion which largely affected the RK beach, Tenneti Park and Rushikonda areas extended towards the Gokul Park area. An expert team, which studied the beach erosion, is likely to submit a report this month.
Though some temporary mitigation measures such as piling stones are taken, no permanent actions have materialised. In the meantime, the scenic Vizag beaches are on the verge of losing their charming seafronts.
