Assam: Couple sells newborn to pay hospital bill
Guwahati: In a desperate move to clear a hospital bill of Rs 29,000, a couple in Assam's Chirang district sold their newborn. According to a report in The Telegraph, Sabita Narzary and Philip had their first baby in a private hospital because of complications in Sabita’s pregnancy. Philip, who is a daily wage earner could not afford to pay the bill.
So when a nurse approached them saying there was a childless couple who was willing to pay his bill and take the baby in exchange, the couple agreed. Unable to make ends meet, Philip felt that was the only solution he had.
"I don't have money for the hospital and medicines, so I brought back my ailing wife home," he was quoted as saying.
Meanwhile, Bongaigaon Deputy Commissioner Biswajit Pegu said he was unaware of the incident but said he would look into the matter and act accordingly.
