Sewage flow into River Cauvery: Karnataka yet to respond to National Green Tribunal’s notice

The Karnataka government is yet to respond to the notice

BENGALURU: The Karnataka government is yet to respond to the notice issued by National Green Tribunal (NGT) over a petition challenging the state’s action in discharging effluents into river Cauvery flowing into downstream Tamil Nadu. A lawyer appearing for Karnataka in the Cauvery river water dispute tribunal said, “The state has not received the notice. Once the government gets the notice, we will file a counter reply”.

Before filing its reply, the irrigation department will seek the opinion of the State Pollution Control Board and BWSSB, the lawyer added.

Following a Deccan Chronicle report titled ‘Karnataka sending sewage down Cauvery to Tamil Nadu’, a Chennai-based advocate had filed a public interest litigation seeking directions to restrain Karnataka from polluting the Cauvery.
