Revocation of APSC ban welcomed in Tamil Nadu
The reinstatement of recognition of the APSC by IIT Madras has been welcomed by various political parties
Chennai: The reinstatement of recognition of the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle by IIT Madras has been welcomed by various political parties and social groups who hailed it as a victory of continued protest.
DMK president M. Karunanidhi hailed the IIT Madras’ decision to revoke the ban on the students’ body and claimed that it was opposition from political parties which led to the decision. In a statement, he recalled that he had sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention in the issue to ensure that a ‘healthy atmosphere’ prevailed in the campus of the premier technical institute even as other leaders had issued statements condemning the action against the student body.
“Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi had written to the IIT director (against the ban). The DMK and VCK had staged protests. As a result, IIT Madras revoked the ban on the Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle (APSC),” the DMK chief said, thanking all those who supported the students’ cause.
Party treasurer M.K. Stalin also welcomed the decision and said that educational institutions should encourage discussion. “Student groups should have the freedom to express their views within the bounds of the law and the institution’s rules. Youth are our future and we should give them the freedom to debate and explore different points of view,” he
said.
CPI state secretary R. Mutharasan said that the IIT Madras administration had revoked the ban under pressure from the intensified protest by secular and democratic forces against the attack on freedom of expression. “It is a victory for united struggle. Now the regressive forces were pushed a step behind,” he said.
