Bid to sabotage bar probe alleged

Following a request by the Speaker, they cooperated with the proceedings of the House

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The opening day of the Assembly session on Monday witnessed Opposition uproar over the bar bribery case.

As the question-hour began, members on the Opposition benches shouted slogans, raising banners and placards, demanding ouster of finance minister K M Mani and excise minister K Babu.

They even sought the resignation of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Following a request by the Speaker, they cooperated with the proceedings of the House.

During the zero-hour, the Opposition gave notice for an adjournment motion demanding discussion on the alleged attempts by the government to sabotage probe. Opposition leader V S Achuthanandan said the people of Aruvikkara would give a fitting reply to the Oommen Chandy government “neck deep in corruption”.

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan demanded that Mr Mani should be subjected to lie detection test. He also accused Mr Chandy of sabotaging the probe against Mr Mani and Mr Babu.

He said the government was having different laws for the two ministers. Denying the allegations, home minister Ramesh Chennithala said the probe against Mr Mani was not yet over.

“The VACB will be filing a report in the court as soon as it completes the probe,” he said. He termed baseless the allegations of the chief minister influencing the probe. The Opposition staged a walkout after the Speaker denied permission to move the adjournment motion.

Later when Mr Mani was about to present the Bill, the Opposition members trooped into the well in a bid to prevent him. As the Opposition continued their protest, the day's proceedings were wound up and House adjourned for the day.
