Family support must for tumour recovery
Hyderabad: Fourteen-year-old Nikhil Sharma (name changed) had accompanied his father who was having a general health check-up done. On seeing Nikhil, the doctor advised him to get a blood test done though he seemed healthy.
After a delay of over two months, a blood test was conducted and the results shocked Nikhil’s family. The boy had a tumour outside the pituitary adenoma due to which the growth hormone was affected. The child had very long and stout fingers, and large overgrown ears, a symptom, which is rare but well recorded in medical history.
Dr S. Chandrashekar, the treating neurosurgeon, said, “When we got the CT scan done, the tumour was immediately identified and we had to operate to remove it. But the boy was very positive and co-operated. It was a non-cancerous tumour but the treatment is aggressive and he left almost two years of education.”
The family gave Nikhil all the emotional strength to deal with the trauma, which is one of the main aspects of good recovery.
