Andhra Pradesh has over 5 lakh dead voters listed
Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh has over 5 lakh dead voters. Their names were on the voters’ list till the election authorities found out. Another 3.55 lakh people had their names on electoral rolls of more than one Assembly constituency.
The election authorities also found as many as 49,348 ineligible voters i.e. under-aged.
In all, names of 9 lakh voters are being removed from the voters list in AP after the exercise of linking Aadhaar data with voters list threw up as many duplicate and dead voters.
People can expect more names to be deleted from the voters list as election officials found “door locked” in case of 37.85 lakh voters. The election officials are visiting voters door by door to verify if they are staying in the same premises as mentioned on the voters list.
Chief electoral officer Bhanwar Lal told this newspaper that there are 3,71,26,478 (3.71 crore) voters in the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh and that this electors list is being cleansed of duplication, ineligible, dead voters among other errors.
Not many people take out time to get the names of their family members deleted from voters list after the demise of the voter concerned.
“Awareness needs to be created among voters that they should not have their names on voters list in multiple Assembly constituencies,” he said.
It may be mentioned that Election Commission had announced linking of Aadhaar data with Voter ID Card across the country for electoral roll authentication and purification drive.
Mr Bhanwar Lal said that this has been taken up to increase transparency in the electoral process.
