What does this nine-year-old do in her free time?
At the age of nine, Hailey has begun building shelters for the homeless in her town
When Hailey Fort was five years old, she came across a homeless man in her hometown Bremerton, Washington, and asked her mom if she could buy him a sandwich.
That simple and thoughtful act took root as kindness in her, and today, at the age of nine, Hailey has begun building shelters for the homeless in her town. With her parents’ guidance, Hailey has been constructing mobile shelters during her free time. Also grows vegetables in her backyard garden for the needy, and provides toiletries for them. Edward, the man she helped all those years ago has become her friend now.
She is quite the handyman — or ‘handygirl’ should we say, and constructs most of the wooden shelters herself using power tools. The shelters are built with windows, a pallet for sleeping, recycled denim insulation and wheels for mobility, and cost $300. “Everyone should have a place to live,” the young activist told King 5 News. According to Bored Panda, Hailey’s goal for this year includes growing 113 kilos of food, building 12 shelters and donating sanitary items by the thousands. Donations to help her cause can be made on GoFundMe.
