Free run for signal violators

Automated signals fail to work as cops do not clear dues to the service provider
Visakhapatnam: The automated red light violation detection (ARLVD) systems at busiest parts of the city to check the traffic violators have not been working for the past three months as the city traffic police wing has reportedly not paid the maintenance fee. With the default of the ARLVD system, most of the red-signal violators are escaping from the lens and are running freely.
With the motorists in the city refusing to stop before the white line or the red light signal, pedestrians are feeling worst hit literally at many parts in Vizag, city traffic police wing with the technical support of the Matrix Security and Surveillance Private Ltd has installed ARLVD system at three busiest places, Satyam Junction and Urvasai Junction on the National Highway-16 stretch and Jagadamba Junction in the city.
A senior traffic police inspector said that the ARLVD system has electronic sensors which are integrated to the video and digital camera with flash on the poles. Soon after the red light is on, the system becomes active and detects violating vehicles.
The camera captures the violated vehicle’s number. Based on the image, the police send e-challan to the violator with the details of violation including photo evidence, date and location of place of violation.
Sources said that now all the ARLVDs in the city are not functioning as the police have not paid the maintenances charges to the service provider. Though Vizag city police wing has been fetching crores of rupees in terms of fines, government has not sanctioned any special funds for the traffic wing. Vizag traffic cops have to pay Rs 3 lakh to the service provider to reactive the ARLVDs.
“The ARLVDs in the city will be reactivated soon as we had put the issue before higher officials,” said ADCP (Traffic) K.M. Patrudu. Due to non-functioning of the system some traffic violators did not get caught,” he added.
