Following Kochi, Aluva too decides to go ‘Smart’

Gateway of Aluva to be erected at bypass leading to Aluva town

KOCHI: If Kochi resolves to be a smart city, can Aluva be far behind? The people’s representatives from Aluva led by Anwar Sadath MLA have decided to create a ‘Smart Aluva’ in association with tourism department and other government agencies.

The legislator and the Aluva municipal council representatives led by chairperson M T Jacob and vice-chairperson Lissy Abraham visited various places to be given a facelift.

They included officials of various government agencies and the consultancy firm appointed for the project.

In the first phase, the Aluva Municipal Park on the banks of Periyar will be beautified and made eco-friendly.

Then an arch ‘Gateway of Aluva’ will be erected at the Aluva bypass leading to Aluva Town. A Kochi Metro Rail station is also coming near the bypass.

“Footpaths in Aluva will be made even and tiles paved for smooth walk for pedestrians,” Mr Sadath said.

“Handrails too will be fitted on flanks abutting the road. At the government hospital junction, the present unscientific traffic island will be demolished and a new one erected along with a fountain”.

In the third phase, the whole of Aluva town will become Wi-Fi-enabled with CCTV cameras at select places with connectivity to the police control room for surveillance.
‘Sthupams’ will be erected at key entry points like Pulinchodu junction, Marwar Junction and Azizi Junction. The streets will have high-mast lights providing proper lighting and security at night.

Chennai-based Pithavadian and Partners has been selected as the consultants for the project after discussions by the people’s representatives with tourism department officials.
They will submit a master plan.

“The projected estimate for the project is Rs 10 crore. We propose to raise it through various means including CSR funds of companies,” said Mr Sadath.
