More Laparoscopy machines to make it to Bengaluru's Victoria Hospital

Keyhole surgery or band-aid surgery will soon be added in govt-run Victoria Hospital

Bengaluru: High-end Laparoscopy equipment used for Laparoscopic surgery which is also called minimally invasive surgery, keyhole surgery or band-aid surgery will soon be added in government-run Victoria Hospital.

The hospital currently has only one Laparoscopy equipment set and it has been granted funds to purchase two more sets of laparoscopy equipment. "We are currently using only one equipment set and a further addition of two more sets would be very beneficial for the patient pool which is huge at Victoria Hospital," says Dr Durganna T, Medical Superintendent of government-run Victoria Hospital who adds, "Depending on the treatment, we perform some ten surgeries everyday.

“Laparoscopic procedures can be performed using small incisions of around 0.5 to 1.5 cm that can be made far from the surgical site. Small, thin surgical instruments can then be passed through the incision and threaded through to the operational site. The whole procedure is carried out using a laparoscope which is a small tube with a camera at the tip that can be used to relay images from inside the body to a TV monitor," informs Dr Durganna T who says that the open surgeries generally take a lot of time but in this case the patient’s stay in the hospital is reduced considerably. With the laparoscopy equipment, nearly all surgeries can be covered, like abdominal surgery, appendix, Colorectal surgery and intestine surgery.”

“Apart from caesarian section it can be used for almost all surgeries,” adds Dr Durganna. A simple laparoscopic surgery which costs people nearly Rs 40,000 in private hospitals will cost them here around Rs 5,000 only. "For an appendix surgery in any private hospital it would cost the patient somewhere around Rs 35,000- Rs 40,000 but here the cost reduces to a mere Rs 3,000. Once the tender is finalised we will make the purchase,” sums up Dr Durganna.
