Get ready for a load of advertisements on Instagram
The social media network wants to target Instagram’s 300 million active monthly users
Instagram announced that it will now open itself to a larger section of advertisers to generate revenue from the photo and video sharing app. The advertising option was earlier only available to a select set of marketers, but now Instagram is keen to open the market to Facebook advertisers as well. Instagram, which was purchased by Facebook for $1 billion, is keen to start generating revenue by monetizing through advertisements. The social media network wants to target Instagram’s 300 million active monthly users.
“There are more than two million advertisers who actively use Facebook to market their business and we want to leverage the best of Facebook’s infrastructure for buying, managing and measuring the success of ads on Instagram,” the photo app said in a blog post.
The company also intends to use better ad targeting tools that will encourage its users to not just view the ads but also produce concrete results such as buying the product or downloading the app. The company is also keen to introduce direct-response ads that will ask users to sign up for a newsletter. Facebook wasn’t keen to introduce advertisement into the structure of Instagram after its purchase in 2012. Last year the social media giant tested the waters by opening up Instagram feeds only to select carefully chosen companies, before which Instagram was supported by Facebook.
“People come to Instagram to follow their passions, from travel and fashion to cars and entertainment. They want to see ads that reflect the things they care about,” the company said in its blog post. Instagram also said it will look to localise the ads depending on the demographics to increase brand awareness. “Advertisers can target their messages in more effective ways and reach people not just because of their age, location and gender, but because of the people, places and things they love,” Instagram added.
Instagram will allow advertisers to post images and share messages that will pop up on your feed as sponsored content along with buttons below them — shop now/ Install now/ Sign Up etc — that will enable you to engage with businesses you like more effectively. Instagram will also have a user-friendly means of giving feedback on various advertisements and
brands.
