Jayalalithaa files bypoll nomination

67-year-old charismatic politician is making her debut from a city constituency

Chennai: Joyous supporters made Friday memorable for the AIADMK party and its supremo J. Jayalalithaa who filed her nomination papers for the June 27 bypoll to the Radhakrishnan Nagar Assembly constituency in north Chennai.

It should be a romp for the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister. Most opposition parties have already cried off while CPI decided to field its candidate Mahendran on Friday. The 67-year-old charismatic politician is making her debut from a city constituency.

The entire route from her residence to Tondiarpet was decorated with festoons as AIADMK members braved the scorching sun and greeted her amid playing of traditional musical instruments. Having returned as Chief Minister of the state for the fifth time last month, she has to be elected as MLA within six months. P Vetrivel of AIADMK had quit as MLA of RK Nagar on May 17, paving the way for Jayalalithaa to contest from a city constituency and return to the 234-member state Assembly in which her party enjoys a strong majority of 150.

While DMK, MDMK, VCK and PMK have announced boycott of the bypoll, CPI) has decided to contest with the support of CPI(M) while NDA constituents BJP and DMDK are yet to make up their mind.
