Shashi Tharoor hails Ommen Chandy’s Vizhinjam move

Dr. Tharoor also failed to see why some were opposing the project by objecting to the selection of Adani

Thiruvananthapuram: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has welcomed Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s resolve to go ahead with Vizhinjam port project and urged him to finalize the contract at the next cabinet meeting, lest it should end up a terrible injustice to the people.

In a release here on Thursday, Dr Tharoor cited Union Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari’s warning that any further delay would result in the transfer of the Rs 7,000-crore international project to Colachel in Tamil Nadu.

“If that occurs, it would be a terrible injustice to the people of Thiruvananthapuram, who have eagerly waited for the fulfilment of this project for 25 long years”, said Dr Tharoor.

He said the Opposition was playing politics though fully aware that the project was a path-breaker and would significantly contribute to the development of the State.

Dr. Tharoor also failed to see why some were opposing the project by objecting to the selection of Adani, who had already bagged the contract to implement the City Gas Distribution project in Ernakulam.

“Those who oppose his selection after an open, transparent and fair tender process should explain why a particular individual is acceptable for Kochi's development but not for Thiruvananthapuram”, he asked.
