Jayalalithaa orders probe into Maggi noodles mess

Orders officials from Tamil Nadu Food Safety & Drugs Administration to test samples

Chennai: There are four shops in domestic and international terminals selling Maggi food products.Meanwhile, officials from the Tamil Nadu Food Safety & Drugs Administration Department conducted checks in shops across the city on Thursday, including Mylapore, R.A.Puram, Alwarpet, Ayanavaram and Anna Nagar to take samples of the food products and send them to the lab for testing of quantity of lead and other chemicals in the food varieties.

Based on reports from a few states about presence of higher quantity of lead in Nestle's Maggi noodles, Chief Minister J.Jayalalithaa had ordered officials of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety & Drugs Administration Department to test samples of noodles available in the market and see whether they adhere to the norms laid down in the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. Based on the test results officials have initiated legal action as per section 30 (2)(a) of the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006.

With mounting safety concerns in many states over Maggi noodles, Puducherry government on Thursday said samples have been sent for lab tests and follow up action would be taken, based on the results.“Samples of Maggi noodles have been sent for tests here and to Delhi. The results of the lab tests are expected to be available by evening and depending on the findings the government would take follow up action," Puducherry Chief Minister N Rangasamy told reporters.

According to Kumar Rajagopalan, CEO, Retailers Association of India, the retailers are waiting for the final verdict from Foods Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). "Currently it has been banned in some states but the final decision will be taken by FSSAI. Only after that Retailers Association of India will decide the further steps. In the states where it has been banned, retailers will abide by the law and will remove the products from the shelves," he said.
