Bengaluru transport department steps up drive against cab services
Bengaluru: Another shocking incident of an assault of a woman passenger by an Uber driver in New Delhi has once again brought the issue of passenger safety to the fore. On the measures taken in Bengaluru, Transport Commissioner Ramegowda said, “We have intensified our drive. Every day we have been seizing cabs that are found violating the rules. We have been discussing a lot of issues with the central government and we have also sent our recommendations. We should get a final notification from the Centre in a week.”
On the lack of a strong public transport system, Mr Ramegowda said, “We are looking at improving the fleet of BMTC buses. But I would urge people to go for reliable cab services as there are many registered cab operators.”
Pointing to lack of proper public transport system, Mr Josy Mathew, an IT employee, said, “Auto drivers charge exorbitant fares and buses are either overcrowded or have no direct connectivity. We are forced to choose cabs.”
Voicing a similar opinion, Ms Reshmi Choudary, who travels from Koramangala to Yeshvanthpur by cabs frequently, said, “This is a risk that we all take. They are affordable and readily accessible. Why is the Metro not in place? Why is there no commuter rail? When all other metro cities are exploring such areas, why are we lagging?”
