Hyderabad: Telangana students may have to join community colleges in Andhra Pradesh and other neighbouring states. The University Grants Commission had granted just one community college in the state while Andhra Pradesh got six of them in different fields. Community colleges impart short term specialised industry specific courses in collaboration with counterparts from Europe and the United States among others.

The idea of community colleges was mooted in the state education ministers meeting of February 2012. The Union HRD ministry had also signed a MoU on a framework for development of community colleges under the UK India Education and Research Initiative.

The Jawaharlal Nehru College in Karimnagar district will function as a community college offering short term courses in electrical technology. The community colleges given to AP will be located in Krishna, Guntur among others. The colleges will collaborate with Shoreline Community College in the US and Hackney Rodnox Commu-nity College in the UK.
