Kerala High Court seeks state affidavit on transgenders

A petition seeking the state to provide all benefits and privileges to transgenders
Kochi: Kerala High Court on Wednesday asked the state to file an affidavit on a petition seeking the state to provide all benefits and privileges to transgenders in tune with the directions of the Supreme Court.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice A.M. Shaffique passed the order on a plea filed by lawyer Basil Attipety. The petitioner pointed out that the Supreme Court had directed the centre and the state government to come forward with positive steps to address the grievances of the transgenders.
Even though Tamil Nadu and New Delhi had decided to implement the directions, Kerala had not initiated any steps in this regard, the petitioner stated. The government pleader submitted that the enumeration of transgenders in the state was on.
Order to close off-campus centres challenged:
The off-campus centre management association on Wednesday moved Kerala High Court challenging the order issued by the Chancellor asking the Mahatma Gandhi University to wind up all the off-campus centres functioning outside the jurisdiction of the university.
The association argued that the Chancellor had issued the order in the guise of implementing the High Court directives in this regard. The petitioner pointed out that what these judgments prevented was the functioning of offshore campus centres only. The Chancellor had not given any such directive to the Calicut University. The off-campus centres of the Calicut University had been functioning all over the state.
The High Court judgment did not intend to wind up all the off- campus centres of the Mahatma Gandhi University. Besides, the order was discriminatory as the other universities in the state had been allowed to operate their off-campus centres in the state.
