Kerala government, CPM may clash over Pariyaram staff
PMC to follow the staff pattern of other govt medical colleges in the state, the CM said
Kozhikode: Chief Minister Oommen Chandy’s unambiguous words that the government would only keep the staff at the Pariyaram Medical College (PMC) on the staff pattern of other government medical colleges have set the ground for a showdown between the government and the CPM.
If implemented, 202 employees would be fired and many others demoted, according to the report of the expert committee entrusted to look into the posts and qualifications of the staff at PMC.
Sources in the CPM, which controls it now, say no sacking or demotion of an employee would be allowed. The party would politically oppose the move by the UDF regime in its last leg. Besides PMC, there are seven institutions under the Academy of Medical Sciences that came under the panel's’s scanner.
To complete the takeover process, the major hindrance has been the setting up of staff pattern on the lines of other medical colleges. The expert committee found 202 illegal appointments, a majority of them in the nursing department and class-IV posts.
“We have looked into the matter according to the staff requirement and Medical Council of India guidelines,” said Kannur district medical officer Dr K J Reena, who headed the panel. The ‘illegal’ appointments were made on political considerations during both under the UDF and LDF dispensations.
The finding of the committee that a professor at the PMC has no matching work experience with those at other medical colleges is a major issue and the disparity is found in almost all posts. PMC governing body chairman and CPM leader M.V Jayarajan said that no appointment was illegal.
“All appointments adhered to the policy of respective bodies and they were made in the interests of the patients,” he said adding he could not respond how CPM would react to retrenchment.“Let us wait and see what the government is going to do”.
